Root Canal Therapy

Feeling pain in your teeth or gum? You may need a root canal to remove infections from your cavities. We offer root canal treatments to our patients in Port Hope and Cobourg to relieve pain and discomfort.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

When the core of your tooth - referred to as the "pulp" - becomes infected or inflamed, we perform root canal therapy to treat it. Left unattended, an infected pulp can cause loss of teeth, pain, swelling, or an abscess. Undergoing root canal therapy is a necessary step for infection, and it is the best option for avoiding teeth extraction. Root canal therapy maintains your natural tooth without the need for dentures or implants as a replacement, leaving you looking and feeling normal.

Root Canal Procedure

Root canal treatment starts by clearing out damaged areas of the tooth under local anesthetic. Once the pulp chamber has been breached, more anesthetic may be injected to relieve any further pain. All the tissues within the tooth will be removed and the inside will be disinfected. The root canals will be filled with a rubber-like material and the pulp chamber is filled with cotton, and a temporary filling used to seal the opening. During the next visit, the temporary filling will be replaced with a core buildup and the tooth is finished with a filling or a crown.

The process of a root canal involves little to no pain because of local anesthesia, and it takes our Port Hope dentist a couple of visits to ensure that your teeth are healed properly and the infection removed completely.
